Dear Sir,
My name is John and I am a regular reader of your Magazine "society today". I am writing you regarding an article about popular culture that you published last month. I thought that the article was excellent and well written, but in my opinion some important aspects were left out. I want to forward those comments to you in case you might find them interesting.
Firstly, the article explains that popular culture places great emphasis in the importance of image and appeareance. Well, I could not agree more. One clear example are the advertisements on TV and music videoclips, where all actors are incredible attractive, with nice smiles and gorgeous bodies.
However, when you explain which kinds of popular culture follow this pattern, you only include the media, sports and fashion industries. I think that this is highly restrictive, because nowadays other forms of culture are also based on external and visual aspects. Think for example in the videogame industry, which manages more money than the movies industry and everywere you look you see attractive images and characters.
Putting that aside, I clearly disagree with the fact that you are blaming the popular culture for the complete responsability of the existance of superficial and materialistic people. I agree that the popular culture has an important role in that, but other aspects like education values or politics are also greatly at fault. Especially education should focus in teaching to children and adults which are the right values of society, showing that the truly important things is your interior, and how you feel about yourself. It is because of the lack of values in education that other aspects like popular culture are having such a great influence in our society.
I hope you find this letter useful, and I would be grateful if you could comment some of this topics in future issues of your magazine.
Best regards
John
